Make a rich, creamy, and smooth chocolate mousse without baking or using raw eggs. This simple recipe is perfect for beginners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, cold

Instructions

  1. Place the chopped chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl.
  2. Pour the hot water over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes.
  3. Whisk the chocolate and water mixture until completely smooth. Stir in the sugar and vanilla extract. Set aside to cool slightly.
  4. In a separate large bowl, whip the cold heavy cream using an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  5. Gently fold about one-third of the whipped cream into the cooled chocolate mixture to lighten it.
  6. Carefully fold the remaining whipped cream into the chocolate mixture until just combined and no white streaks remain. Do not overmix.
  7. Spoon the mousse into individual serving dishes or small glasses.
  8. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours, or until firm.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate with 70% cacao content or higher.
  • If you prefer a double chocolate version, add 1/4 cup of melted milk chocolate to the base mixture before folding in the whipped cream.
  • You can substitute the hot water with strong brewed coffee for a subtle mocha flavor.
