Make a hearty, messy sandwich using a savory ground beef filling served on thick, buttery Texas Toast topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (thick-cut bread)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  5. While the filling simmers, lightly spread butter on one side of each slice of Texas Toast.
  6. Heat a separate large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the toast butter-side down on the hot surface. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  7. Place one slice of cheese on top of four of the toast slices during the last minute of toasting, allowing it to melt slightly.
  8. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the four slices of toast topped with cheese.
  9. Top each serving with the remaining four slices of toast to form a sandwich. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, toast the bread in the oven under the broiler until golden brown instead of using a skillet.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or ground pork for the ground beef.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce to the filling for extra heat.
