A simple, comforting dish combining pizza flavors with pasta in a single pot, finished as a quick bake.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound dry penne pasta
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage or ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup mini pepperoni slices
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, brown the sausage or ground beef with the chopped onion. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for one minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Add the dry penne pasta to the boiling sauce mixture. Stir well to combine.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is nearly tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  7. Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the mini pepperoni slices.
  8. Transfer the pasta mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  9. Top evenly with the shredded mozzarella cheese and the grated Parmesan cheese.
  10. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are lightly browned.
  11. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for the sausage or beef for a lighter version.
  • For a less saucy result, reduce the chicken broth by half a cup.
  • This dish freezes well after baking; cool completely, cover tightly, and freeze for up to three months. Thaw overnight and reheat covered at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
