Make a creamy, comforting green bean casserole with a crispy fried onion topping. This recipe offers a traditional flavor profile suitable for any holiday meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 1.5-quart baking dish.
  2. Cook the green beans until they are tender-crisp. You can steam or boil them for about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain them well.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  4. Gently stir the cooked green beans into the soup mixture until everything is coated.
  5. Pour the bean mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle 1 cup of the crispy fried onions evenly over the top of the casserole. Reserve the remaining onions for later.
  7. Bake for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of crispy fried onions over the top.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  10. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a from-scratch version, replace the condensed soup with a homemade mushroom sauce thickened with a roux.
  • You can prepare this casserole up to 24 hours ahead; cover and refrigerate, then add 10 minutes to the initial baking time.
  • If you prefer softer beans, boil them for 8 to 10 minutes instead of steaming.
