You can make a superior pizza sauce right at home using simple pantry staples. This quick, no-cook recipe delivers bright, authentic tomato flavor that beats any store-bought jar for your next pizza night.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes (preferably San Marzano)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Drain the whole peeled tomatoes, reserving the liquid. Place the whole tomatoes in a medium bowl.
  2. Crush the tomatoes using your hands or a potato masher until you reach your desired consistency. For a smoother sauce, you can pulse them briefly in a food processor, but avoid over-processing.
  3. Stir in the olive oil, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper into the crushed tomatoes.
  4. If the sauce seems too thick for spreading, add one or two tablespoons of the reserved tomato liquid until you reach a good consistency for your pizza crust.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust salt or pepper as needed. This homemade pizza sauce is ready to use immediately on your pizza dough.

Notes

  • For an authentic Neapolitan taste, use only high-quality canned San Marzano tomatoes; they have a natural sweetness that requires less added seasoning.
  • If you prefer a slightly richer flavor, you can let this no-cook pizza sauce sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before using to allow the flavors to meld.
  • This recipe makes a thick pizza sauce perfect for holding toppings, but you can thin it slightly if you prefer a wetter base.
