Ingredients
Scale
8 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup lemon-lime soda (like Sprite)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thick wedges, about 8 wedges per apple.
Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. Do not separate the triangles. Cut each large triangle into four smaller triangles. You should have 24 small triangles.
Place a few apple wedges on the wide end of a small dough triangle. Sprinkle lightly with a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Roll the dough tightly around the apples to seal the edges completely, forming a dumpling shape. Place the sealed dumpling, seam-side down, into the prepared baking dish. Repeat with remaining apples and dough.
In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, remaining cinnamon, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Do not boil.
Pour the soda over the dumplings in the baking dish.
Carefully pour the melted butter and sugar mixture evenly over the dumplings.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving warm with the pan sauce spooned over top.
Notes
Use firm apples that hold their shape well during baking.
If you prefer a thinner sauce, use 1/2 cup of water instead of soda.
You can substitute Mountain Dew for the lemon-lime soda for a slightly different flavor profile.
